Interview with the multi-talent Carol Cake

Interview with the multi-talent Carol Cake.

Wutz Hood Radio: Hello Carol, we hope that things are going well for you. How are you doing?
Carol Cake:  What’s up Wutz Hood Radio! Thank you for having me I am doing well.

Wutz Hood Radio: Thanks for doing this interview. Okay, so let’s get right to it. Tell us a little bit about yourself, and feel free to elaborate. Where are you from? What is your nationality? How old are you? Do you act? Are you a model? Do you have a special someone? What is your educational background? How did you get started in music, and who are your biggest music influences?

Carol Cake:  I am from Southern California . I’ve lived all over Southern California . The IE , Cypress, Long Beach and LA.  My nationality is Puerto Rican and Creole Black . My father is from Puerto Rico and lives in Puerto Rico and my mother is from New Orleans and lives in LA. I am 30 years old. Yes I do act I became a SAG Scaled actress three years ago. I do also model as well I’ve done runway , sports modeling and high fashion. Currently my status is married to the grind lol! I attended USC on a full ride track and field athletic scholarship . I graduated with a bachelors degree from the University of Southern California so I am a Trojan for life!! Lol. I got started in music when I was in fourth grade . I played the clarinet in jazz band , symphonic band and marching band . I played the clarinet for nine years . I began writing and rapping lyrics when I was in elementary school.  I had a 2-XL Robot that I had gotten as a gift for Christmas . The robot was supposed to be used for trivial and educational questions . I answered all the questions on the tapes so once I got tired of that I then began to use the robot to record myself rapping and singing. I used to write lyrics and rap on the playground  and in detention in elementary , junior high  and high school lol . When I got to college I then begin to play piano because I wanted to learn how to read and write treble and bass clef. While at USC I would always throw on instrumental beats with my teammates and play around freestyling or writing music . I put out my first song back into 2011. I did a two verse cover to Lil Wayne’s 6 foot 7 foot single. Growing up I listen to a lot of my music influences at an early age such as Marvin Gaye , Michael Jackson, Cher, Prince and  Earth Wind and Fire. Some of my other music influences are R.E.M, Aaliyah, SWV, Total, R Kelly, Missy Elliott, Daddy Yankee, Big Pun , Beenie Man, Sean Paul,  Conscious Daughters, Da Brat, Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Tupac and Biggie.

Wutz Hood Radio: Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. Most would say that you are more than just a triple threat. You are gorgeous, your music is awesome, you can rap, you can sing, and you are literally a track star, that happens to be a Track & Field 2 time Olympian. What is your event? What medals have you won? Are you currently training for the 2016 Olympics in Rio? If you go to Rio, do you believe that you will win another medal, and we’re not trying to scare you, but will you be worried about the Zika virus?
Carol Cake:  Thank You, I appreciate you guys! My event in track and field is the 200m, 400m and 4 x 100m relay. And I represent my country of Puerto Rico when I competed in the last two Olympic Games. I have won two silvers and one gold medal at the Pan-American games. I have won gold and silver at the Caribbean American Championship games. And I took another gold and silver this year in Rio Brazil at the Iboamericano Championship games. I competed in The Beijing Olympics in 2008 and made it to the semifinals in the London 2012 Olympic Games and finish 12th overall in the world. I am the national record holder for my country of Puerto Rico in the 100m 200m and 400m and 4x100m relay.  I am currently training to make the team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio Brazil. I believe that if I go to Brazil with all of the training , dedication, time , work and consistency that I have given to my beloved sport of track and field that I should be able to win a medal. As far as the Zika virus,  I was just down in Brazil last month for a week and did not see any mosquitoes there. I am a little bit worried about the Zika virus I will just make sure to wear long sleeve and long tights  and wear “Off” bug spray while I’m there.

Wutz Hood Radio: That is all so very interesting. I suppose the next question would have to be, how do you find the time to be so good at everything? You must be busy training for the Olympics most the time, so where and when do you find the time to write songs, and record, eat, sleep, let alone have any kind of social life? How do you do it?
Carol Cake:  Yes I am quite busy lol. I find time to write music all the time , anywhere and any place. I write music at home , on long flights on the plane and while I am away at track meets and I have downtime relaxing in my room. Recording in the studio for me is almost like a performance I come prepared for my studio session ready to work and  record music.  For so many years I have been only focusing on track and field. I wanted to get into other careers and now is the time for me to start doing other passions that I love as well. When you love something you will make time for it. Running track and field has made me the woman who I am today. It has taught me to be mentally strong , and has showed how to keep fighting for something I believe in and to never give up. My social life is still pretty decent,  after the dust settles and I have free time to hang out with my friends and family. Lol

Wutz Hood Radio: We really like the music we’ve heard so far. Who produced your new song “On The Rise”? Are you a producer? Are you still working with the same producers? Do you have any desire to work with other independent producers? If you could work with any producer in the business right now, who would you choose?
Carol Cake:  Thank you I appreciate it.

“On The Rise” was produced by a production company called “Unfair Music” I worked with two producers their names were “DeathWishbeats and “JF On The Beat”. I have helped co-produced some of my other tracks. Yes I am still working with the producers and the production company that produced “On The Rise”. They are awesome. Yes I am open to work with any independent producers.  I couldn’t see any one particular producer I would want to work with . I just want to work with producers who see my vision.

Wutz Hood Radio: What is your favorite song that’s out right now, and who is it by? Are there any mainstream, or indie artist out there right now, that you would love to work with? If so who, and if no, why not?
Carol Cake:  One of my favorite songs out right now is “Work” by Rihanna and Drake I like that song because it has a very Caribbean vibe and sound . It reminds me of being back in Puerto Rico or in the Caribbean dancing in my flats at a fun party. I swear island parties are the best! Lol . I like Drake’s and Rihanna’s Music. For mainstream artist I would love to work with Drake or Rihanna.

Wutz Hood Radio: Are you signed to a label, or are you looking to sign with a major label? If so, what record labels are you interested in signing with, and what type of deal are you looking for? Do you have any publishing deals? Have you ever licensed your music for TV, or film?

Carol Cake:  No I am not signed . I am an independent artist currently.  I would be interested in signing with a major label . Some labels could be Def Jam, Roc Nation, Roc Nation Latin, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group , Warner Music Group, Atlantic and a few others. I would like a deal that is beneficial for the artist and makes sense. I do not have a publishing deal. The future holds a lot of promising ventures for me, I’m a business woman. I am currently registered with BMI and working for possible future licensing my music with film and television.

Wutz Hood Radio: Why are you so passionate about music? What does your music mean to you? If you could only pick one, what would you pick, your athletic career, or your music career? We know that’s a tough question, so take your time, but we believe your fans from both sides would love to know the answer.
Carol Cake:  I am passionate about my music because I want to tell my story and I want to be able to inspire others using my experiences by way of music. Music is very emotional. Music can create an emotion from someone. Music is an emotion. It is a mood. Whether the mood is cheerful ,upbeat , turnt up carefree and party vibe or dark ,ghostly , depressing, resenting and dejecting , it’s still a mood or emotion. Sometimes people need music for different moods that they are in. My passion is taking my moods and putting them into the music. If I had to pick one career either my music career or athletic career my answer would be timing is everything. I believe that you don’t have to pick one or the other based off of timing. I am training to make my third Olympic team and compete in my third Olympic Games. Timing will allow me to only run for so long. I believe track and field has prepared me mentally , physically and emotionally to be able to become what I see myself being in my music career. I believe that they go hand-in-hand currently at this moment in time.

Wutz Hood Radio: How would you describe your music? Is there anyone in the music business that you would compare yourself, or your music to?
Carol Cake:  I would describe my music as “Carol Cake Music” which means you’re going to get a variety , a different sound and emotion. I have music influences however I inspire too sound like myself.

Wutz Hood Radio: Are you currently working on any new music? Do you have any mixtapes? When are you releasing an album, or EP? As far as your music is concerned, what can we expect from Carol Cake in the future?

Carol Cake:  Yes I am currently working on new music I am always building my catalog. I am working on a project which is going to be my LP titled “Carol Cake 7 Candles”. I have some more singles that I will be releasing as well from my LP.
